Founding member of Dave Matthews Band, dies
LeRoi Moore, founding member and saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band, passed away last Tuesday, August 19, due to complications from an accident suffered last June. Moore had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.
He was a big contributor to the band's signature sound, incorporating flute and saxophone, providing a jazz fusion/funk feel.
Moore joined DMB in 1991 when Dave Matthews, then working as a bartender, asked Moore and other musicians to play on his demo tape. Although he was not impressed by his singing, LeRoi agreed to help Dave out, and in the process, include Carter Beauford to play drums. Matthews and the band soon broke out with the album Under The Table And Dreaming. In 1997, DMB earned a Grammy for the single So Much To Say. Moore himself was instantly recognizable when he wore his trademark sunglasses onstage.

The Dave Matthews Band was in Los Angeles Tuesday to play concert at the Staples Center when they heard the news. The concert went ahead as scheduled, as it was reported that Dave Matthews paid tribute to Moore during the show. Saxophonist Jeff Coffin, of the band Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, had been filling in for Moore in the Dave Matthews Band summer tour. It is not known how or if the Dave Matthews Band will hire a full time replacement for Moore.
