On The Radio....Three Dog Night with the London Symphony Orchestra
Between 1967 and 1974, many bands like Yes, Caravan, Camel, Moody Blues, Electric Light Orchestra, and the Beatles found a way to unite rock music with symphonic sounds, creating a sub-genre known today as Progressive Rock. Rock albums like "Sgt. Peppers", "Days of Future Passed", "Tommy", "The 6 Wives of Henry The VIII", and "Caravan and the New Symphonia" provide an indication of using classical formats such as a symphony, or opera, to their music. Their goal was to take Rock 'N' Roll into an art form.
And then came Three Dog Night...A straight Rock 'N' Roll band from Los Angeles, California. They were unique for it's time, since it featured three separate lead singers, Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells.
While other bands were busy creating their symphonic rock operas, Three Dog Night generated twenty-one consecutive Top 40 hits, eighteen straight Top 20s, eleven Top 10s, seven number 1s, seven million-selling singles and twelve straight gold LPs, making them [at the time] the most popular band in America. By late '75, they had sold nearly 50 million records.
The band started to slow down by 1976, placing their members to a heavy trial period. Chuck Negron was battling a drug addiction, while the rest took other non-musical projects to survive. By 1981, they reunited and signed a new recording contract with Passport records. Their EP "It's A Jungle" in 1983, marked the last production for the original three-lead vocal trio, but also the closing of their record label.
Cory Wells and Danny Hutton continue to front the band, and with a lineup including original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon, Michael Allsup, Paul Kingery, and Pat Bautz. To this date, Three Dog Night perform live in over 80 countries a year.
In 2002, they released a greatest hits album, in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra [conducted by Larry Baird]; performing fourteen of their chart-topping hits that helped define the Sixties and Seventies, plus two additional tracks: "Saute St. Marie" and "Overground". The fusion of symphonic with classic Three Dog Night hits makes this project memorable. Within a month of its release, a live performance with the Tennesee Symphony Orchestra appeared in DVD format, making many people to rediscover Three Dog Night's music catalogue.
